Tips for a beginner

I have had the game for a long time but started playing only recently. And I am confused beyond imagination i know i have to wait and then kill but i seem to be missing a lot of things i get a hit on something it starts running I follow the blood but it suddenly disappears. And other such scenarios. Any tips or tricks to play better.
