What makes manually cleaning data challenging?

I’m going through an old customer email list for a marketing campaign, and wow… it’s a mess. Tons of outdated emails, duplicate records, and probably a few fake ones too. I thought, "How hard could it be to clean this up?" but now I'm deep in the trenches, questioning my life choices. What makes manually cleaning data such a nightmare.
