Outside View: America is fucked, and it’s BOTH political sides causing this.

America… You’re done. You’re finished.

Your current system no longer works and as an outsider looking in it’s frustrating watching this unfold in real time while all of you refuse to see the issue at the heart of everything.

You’ve perpetuated a society based around “us vs them” on both sides of your political field and now you wonder why your country crumbles and you’re unable to stop it.

This isn’t solely a right or left issue. If the comments and post I’ve seen from BOTH sides are anything to go by you’re all honestly as bad as each other, because you all refuse to address each other as individuals as it’s easier to blame a group than try and understand a person.

What none of you seem to get is that when you’re tarring the entire opposition with the same brush you’re refusing to see the reason your country is so fractured: you run a 2 party system, and you are forced to go one of 2 ways. Your entire political culture is “us vs them”.

In most countries where more than two parties are seriously considered to represent people are free to vote with the policies that best define them as an individual. There’s a lot of policy overlap between different parties and this allows more fine tuning of where you want to place your vote. This also means your chosen representative can better represent your area, instead of relying on 1 of 2 parties to care about your local community.

But in America, while you have independents that run you are basically only ever going to win with Democrat or Republican. This means that if you agree with SOME of the policies of one side, or hate SOME of the policies on the other you’re voting for and against ALL of those policies. So now people who are voting simply for that one thing that they’re offered which would bring them own security are lumped in with groups they don’t want to relate to.

And how do you address this as a country? You just lean in to it. You call each other “Woke” (which I still don’t get as an attack but that’s another rant) or “Nazis” and you push square pegs into round holes to fit the ideology of a political party instead of wondering what matters to those people you’re lumping together. You refuse to see that fighting misinformation with misinformation doesn’t fix anything.

You spread hate, untruths and further divide, and you do all of it out of a righteous sense of “good.”

Good according to your misguided view of god or good according to your misguided morals.

You’ve been raised on a culture of media where the good guys always win against the bad guys, and as we know nobody is the villain of their own story. So that means you have to win, and you have to create a villain to defeat.

The sooner you start to actually think of the person at the heart of the debate you’re having, and stop bringing your preconceived notions to the arguments to vilify and antagonise, the sooner you can start to work together.

The only way I see you having a genuine shot at a future is to change from your current 2 party system to something with several parties that runs more in line with an actual democracy… cause it’s giving your vote a real choice. Or you accept that the United States are not in any way United on views and you just split them up to smaller, more manageable territories.
