shapey, block, and karl and kim latchkey

i know the show satirizes a lot but there were 2 things i couldn’t quite understand: what was the point of shapey and block being switched for a couple episodes? and why were doughy’s parents portrayed as a stereotypical high school couple? not that there will be any definitive answer to these questions but any input would be appreciated.
