Appreciation for R.V. Udhayakumar, the lyricist.
He is well known for his commercial films in village background. Has delivered some of blockbusters in tamil cinema. Some have aged well. Some haven't. But his ability to give out hits should never be overlooked, despite his recent verbal diarrhea.
But this post is an appreciation for his lyrical prowess. R.V Udhayakumar as a lyricist js highly under appreciated. This I feel is due to the fact that most of his songs are attributed to "Vaali" or "Vairamuthu". The fact is , he has written almost all the songs in all of his movies. And these are not just mere word fillers. They're proper poetic and at time deep and thoughful lyrics. Just to give a perception to the wide range he had in his repertoire. These are some songs that he has written.
He wrote the serene "Pachamala poovu". He wrote the song that is synonymous to captain Vijaykanth "Andha vaanatha pola". He also wrote the heavy and melancholic "Nilave mugam kaatu". The mindboggling "innum enna enna seiya pogirai" also was penned by him. The absolute beauty that is "koondukulla enna vechu" and "Nenjukkula innaarunu".
Just look at the range he had. From romance like "Muthu mani maala" to pathos like "paadi parantha kili". From hero worship like "Ejaman kaaladi" to making fun of the heroine like "thalukki thalukki" from outright poetic brilliance like "Ennvendru Solvathamma" to silly nothings "sutti sutti un vaala", he had everything.
Udhayakumar was truly a gifted lyricist.
