Amelia & Meredith 12x05
This scene between Amelia and Meredith after Penny being invited to dinner came up on my recommended and I realized I had a change of opinion.
At first I was on Meredith’s side, particularly Amelia being self centered in her grief “Why would you do this to me?” and alot of the comments agreed, I was also pretty young so I likrly was just following public opinion.
However—and I’d love to hear your thoughts on this—I think Meredith is so accustomed to trauma that she becomes narrow minded and forgets that others are still affected.
Like with Amelia, She didn’t call her the night Derek died or tell her that Penny was his doctor. When she announces jokingly, “Perfect Penny killed my husband” with Amelia right there! that was harsh. And Amelia was right—Meredith should have told her, taken her to a room or have done something.
and I won’t compare who has more right to grieve…..but Meredith did it first, everyone ( besides penny ) had their own relationship with Derek but Amelia was his sister!!
Callie slamming the table really made me realize how dismissive everyone is toward Amelia. Callie disregards her feelings because she wants everyone to forgive Penny, and Meredith dismisses her because, as Derek’s wife and a mother of three, she sees her own grief as the priority.
Maybe Meredith wasn’t expecting the truth to come out at dinner, and with the tension so high, she lashed out at Amelia out of frustration. While her emotions were valid, she was still in the wrong.
I might just be stating the obvious since they resolved it after their talk in the storage closet, but I’m curious if any of you have something new to share, had a change or stuck with the same opinion. Let me know!
