What is this clip?

I did the first oil change on my 2024 Ford Escape (1.5 I 3 cylinder). When I took off the factory oil filter, this fell out into my drain pan. I have no idea what it is or if it's supposed to go somewhere. Not to mention, it's broken, and I didn't put enough force on anything to break it. Any guesses?
