Album Discussion: MAMA [Korean Version]
First things first, credits go to r/SwiftlyNeutral for this idea! I thought it would fun to have weekly discussions on each EXO album, in order. Admittedly part of me worries that this has already been done, but when I checked via the search function it seems like the ones I could find are discussions when the albums came out, or prior to their actual release.
This is basically a place to discuss your thoughts and opinions on MAMA (the mini album). I specified Korean version because, for MAMA at least, I’d like to keep Korean and Chinese versions separate, simply because I don’t think a lot of people talk about the Chinese versions and I would like to give them their own space. Whether this separation continues probably depends on MAMA, I’ll see.
To post my own thoughts on MAMA, I think it was a solid first mini album. I’m not the biggest fan of What Is Love - for me it just goes on a little too long, hence my preference for Moonlight as a vocal duo song. I’m also not the biggest listener of Angel either. I do like the other songs though, including Two Moons.
One thing I think was done well is the structure of the album. What I mean by this, is that SM didn’t just release an album with six songs and call it a day. What Is Love shows off the vocals of Baekhyun and D.O. History’s music video is more dance and performance focused, so that’s good for members like Kai and Sehun. MAMA is honestly a great debut (aside from the yelling/screaming part, I’m sorry but that was not Kai’s finest moment). Angel continues what What Is Love started, with the addition of Suho, and Two Moons gives the rap line time to shine. Machine, which is probably my favourite song off the album, finishes everything off nicely. (In my opinion at least).
In terms of styling, I’m not going to sit around saying it was good, or even great. I assume it was the leftover influence of 2nd gen. It’s not insulting, but I think we can agree that future EXO had far better styling.
