Top historical and cultural places/experiences

Hey all,

I am visiting Bali durng the first week of October. What are the must see historical or cultural places I need to visit. I am not interested in doing the crowded, touristy places nor do I want the perfect picture. Love to understand the origins, architecture, history and local traditions.

Are there any local festivals coming up during this time? Any ideas on where to stay are very welcome.
