But Daddy I Love Him (lyric interpretation)
Okay so I personally interpret this album to blend segments (and people) of her recent life together and based on that I was listening to But Daddy I Love Him today and I had some thoughts.
The song is widely interpreted to be about fan reaction to MH and it not helping - it just caused her to dig her heels in etc. However I do think she blends in the start of Travis and reactions to him as well. I think it only serves her point that this wasn’t a 1 time thing that fans and non fans continue to overstep.
Lyric 1 I forget how the West was won I forget if this was ever fun I just learned these people only raise you To cage you
I found the west was won lyric odd from the first listen but I am a history teacher and I wonder if she is referencing Kansas here. Kansas in short became a point of tension and violence when westward expansion was happening. I think she might be referencing the start of their relationship when just like before it became a massive circus and it wasn’t fun even if people were being kinder about it than MH.
Lyric 2
Now I'm dancin' in my dress in the sun and Even my daddy just loves him I'm his lady And, oh, my God, you should see your faces Time, doesn't it give some perspective? And, no, you can't come to the wedding I know it's crazy, but he's the one I want
This is the one that really drew my eye. Mainly because I think it would be funny if she was making a sly reference to Scott having hesitation as a Philly fan with even my Daddy just loves him. Scott from what we have seen does like Travis and why would he like Matty?
I also think it references people being shocked she was dating the all American football star with I’m his lady you should see your faces and I know it’s crazy. Something that is also reflected in so high school where she is talking about it being crazy that is feels like high school.
Obviously I do think the song is mostly referencing the reaction to MH but I do think she is referring the start of TK and obviously her life choices in general. She wants people to know her life is her own and so the references blur imo.
Anyway feel free to tell me what you think and if you think there are any other blurred references in the song. I love it so much.
