Help please smoke screen device

Ok so I’m trying to make a smoke grenade/device and I have looked up videos using potassium nitrate,sugar, and paraffin wax The mix I was using was 46g nitrate ,25g sugar and 29 grams wax. Melting wax and once melted mixing the mix after grinding it separately with coffee grinder and mixing for a bit once put in a cardboard cylinder with both ends with plaster and a 3/4 inch hole on one side. After that I mix 50/50 nitrate to sugar after 10 hours of wax cooling I put some of the 50/50 mix I. The middle since their was a 3/4 inch hole in middle for easier ignition but the problem was that the starter mix did ignite but it did not ignite the wax mix am I using to much wax should I use powdered sugar instead of grinding granulated sugar this is all for a possible cheaper airsoft grenade. I appreciate any help I would like to stick to easy to get ingredients If possible
