why aren't Oscar nominated movies "popular"?

And to clarify, when I say "popular," I mean that while a lot of Oscar or other award-winning movies receive critical acclaim, I don’t see many people talking about them. For example, The BrutalistAnora, and Emilia Perez—most people didn’t even know about these films before they were nominated.

For example, The Substance. The only videos I watch on YouTube are film critic stuff and reaction content, and that's about it. I subscribe to a ton of film critics, and the majority of the videos in my feed were talking about The Substance. I saw it and really liked it, but outside of the film critic YouTubers I watched, I didn't see a lot of marketing for it in comparison to, say, Captain America: Brave New WorldSmile 2, or any big blockbuster movie.

Why is it that Oscar-nominated or award-winning movies often aren't widely popular among the general audience or casual moviegoers? Is it because these films cater more to cinephiles—people who actively seek out and watch new films regularly—rather than mainstream audiences who prefer more accessible or commercially driven movies?
