Any coming of age stories told from the female perspective?
TLDR, trying to broaden my horizons, want to read some books centered around women, written by women, doesn't have to be strictly fantasy.
I'm trying to write a book where one of the main characters is a peasant girl growing up in a pastoral, conservative culture which enters a great time of war. It finally clicked for me yesterday that what I truly need for her story to be compelling is to write it as a good coming of age story, because some of my favorite stories are basically coming of age ones. Malice, Harry Potter (athis being written by a woman mind ye), The Ember Blade, Warlord Chronicles all have coming of age stories within them, but all of them focus on male characters. And all of them in some way or another deal with war, finding love and making new friends and gathering allies.
When it comes to books that fit this criteria of 'about women, by women', so far I've read Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, which isn't fantasy or even fiction but good golly a comic every one should read, and my favorite book of all time ever, Vivia by Tanith Lee. I also kind of read Song of Ice and Fire but I don't want my female MC to be the next Arya or Sansa.
On my TBR list currently I have The Neapolitan Quartet by Elena Ferrante which I started reading years ago and LOVED but had to drop it due to mental health circumstances; Boudica: Dreamng the Eagle by Manda Scott which looks as if it will serve my itch for a warrior growing up story; then I have a few novels that go in a subgenre I really like, that being Greek myths or folklore retold like Ariadne by Jennifer Saint, Sistersong by Lucy Holland, Circe by Madeline Miller, Matrix by Lauren Groff, and Wolf Den by Elodie Harper.
If anyone can recommend some more that would be nice please, thanks!
