A First Crack at Tom Bombadil
So after the reveal today, and Tom being my favorite character from LOTR, I thought I'd try my hand at my first ever 5-color deck and I wanted to get some thoughts on it. Decklist here.
A couple notes first:
1) Replace Child of Alara with Tom (Card Text in the description) obviously
2) This is a rough cut and still needs some trimming
3) Ignore the mana base, just filler until I figure out which duals and triomes I actually have. We ballin' on a budget!
Deck Description
Obviously very saga heavy. I'm relying on saga effects to do a lot of heavy lifting for the usual effects you want in a deck: Draw, Removal, Recursion, Ramp. But I did include a larger amount of sagas that can pump my creatures and remove my opponents' creatures to rely on Tom Voltron as a backup wincon, since he'll have indestructible and hexproof most of the time. Hard to break it all down without going into each individual saga. So let's take a look at the supporting cast:
Counter Manipulation
I include a handful of cards like [[Chisei, Heart of Oceans]] and [[Hex Parasite]] to remove counter from my sagas, repeating their effects each turn and keeping them around to keep Tom Indestructible & Hexproof. These can let stuff like [[Kiora Bests the Sea God]] tap your opponents' nonland permanents indefinitely or [[The Horus Heresy]] steal three creatures each turn and never give them back.
SIDE NOTE: You can, in fact remove a third counter from a saga with the effect still on the stack so you can repeat the final effect.
Ramp, Draw & Recursion
All the usual suspects for enchantment decks in here with enchantress effects, enchantment cost reducers and recursion in the form of stuff like [[Starfield of Nyx]] and [[Dance of the Manse]]
Flicker Effects
Just a few flickerers and only the ones that can bounce non-land permanents (as opposed to just creatures), like [[Brago, Kingo Eternal]] and [[Displacer Kitten]] serves to repeat the first effect of each saga. Also, technically you can flicker Tom to get a second trigger on his second effect even though it says "only once per turn", if you can manage to finish off more sagas after he returns with [[Satsuki, the Living Lore]].
Special Mention
[[Estrid's Invocation]] seems like an all-star in this deck, letting you copy the first effect of a saga of your choice every turn, and it gets even better if you can blink it.
Anyways! Let me know what y'all think. Which cards should be first on the cutting block? Any cards I stupidly missed (again, my first time building a 5-color deck)? How would you play this commander???
