Is Batman's Rogues Gallery Complete
I wonder this about Batman's mythos for a while know. Batman is well known for having quite possibly the greatest collection of villains ever assembled, not just in comics but in general. It does seem though that since the 90s however there hasn't been any new villains who have burned their presence into the Batman faiths hearts quite like Joker or Two-face have. Since Bane got added in Knightfall and BTAS gave us Harley Quinn and the modern version of Mister Freeze, the rogues gallery seems to have solidified, even some more recent notable additions like the Court of Owls and Professor Pyg don't seem to have grown to the level that the old guard villains have [and not just because their new].
And when I think about it, I can see why. Batman's rogue gallery is arguable perfect [at least I think it is] and I really don't think another villain on par with Ra's or Scarecrow could find much of a home in Batman's mythos. I think it down to how deep and personal Batman's relationship to his villains are, with each sorta acting like a piece of himself amplified to its extreme. Think about it we have:
Joker: Batman's arch nemesis and a rebellious and violent reflection of Batman psyche
Penguin: Gotham's premier mobster and a fellow member of Gotham's high society
Riddler: A riddle obsessed narcist who has an absolutist sense of logic like Batman
Two Face: The tragic DA who promised Gotham a fairer society, now only a duel identity like Batman
Mr Freeze: A Loving husband unable to let go of his wife, like Batman cant his Parents
Poison Ivy: A Righteous environmentalist, uncompromising in her crusade like Batman
Bane: The physical superior to Batman driven by the same kind of will to elevate himself
Scarecrow: A psychologist obsessed with using fear as a weapon, like Batman does
Ra's al Ghul: Head of the Demon and the intellectual equal of the Batman
Clayface: An actor who takes on the façade of other people, like Batman does as Bruce
Mad Hatter: A delusional imitator of the Hatter, like how Batman imitates Bats
Killer Croc: A man viewed as less than Human, like how Batman is viewed as such
Obviously there are more villains but I notice these twelve seem to be the ones that keep getting used the most and with the kinds of personalities and dynamics they have with Batman its not hard to see why.
Of course maybe I wrong, maybe another villain as important will one day come along, I could see the Court of Owls having a genuine shot if the institutional elitism is emphasised and they get a clear leader character that Batman can primarily interact with [No, not Thomas Wayne jr, that was a bad twist villain]. I do think Batman could do with more female villains too, especially with Catwoman having solidified herself as an anti-hero and Harley and Ivy seeming to be moving in the same direction [one I think should be reversed for at least Ivy].
What does everyone else [i.e. You] think, does Batman have another classic villain he's yet to face or have the core rogues been set in stone?
