Incompatible game error with no mods, Steam-PC to Gamespass-PC? any tips?

Hello!

Trying to join a friends game. I'm on Steam and they're on MSFT Gamepass on PC. We both just downloaded, no mods. When I try to join I get an error:

Outdated client

The match you are trying to join is running an incompatible version of the game. Please try upgrading your game version.

We confirmed that our versions are different on the bottom right of the main menu:

471559/36636 (Games pass)

Vs

476564/36797 (Steam)

But again we both just downloaded so there's no updates needed. Any advice?

ETA: they didn't just download it, and apparently there was an incorrect update pushed to gamespass, so consider this broken but solved.
