Just got ceramic wax… is ceramic coating necessary?

I’m new to the world of car care. I’ve always owned clunkers and was intentionally bohemian (think used Subarus and small pickups with faded paint and dented beds). I honestly never understood car culture UNTIL I went to the lot thinking I was going to drive away in a used Toyota, and then I saw it: a brand new, moonstone grey 2024 VW GTI. It’s been one month and 1200 miles later of me finally getting around town in a car I’m proud of and now I get it. I’m scoping cars on the street and appreciating everything there is to know about car specs, maintenance, and care. and while I love it I never stopped to consider the amount of time, money, and care I need to put into maintaining my car.

My first step has been figuring out how to keep its shine for as long as I can. I want to protect the paint, and just had a ceramic wax applied the other day.

However I just learned about ceramic coating and I’m wondering if I should have done that instead? And if so, should I just go ahead and do that now? Or will the wax be ok for a few months and then I can go for the coat?

And Are there other things I should do to protect my car exterior? Any must haves I’m missing?

Much love in advance for any advice. I’m stoked to have a car to care for.
