Anime that is more like early Dragon Ball (adventure/humor/weirdness) and less like DBZ (villain of the week, fighting, overpowered characters)

I tend to avoid most shonen anime because most of it feels very routine with there being some big "villain of the week" (month, year, season, whatever) that the heroes have to train up to get better, they defeat them, then just gets replaced by a new villain. The whole "Power Rangers" formula of just playing mad libs with the script, but getting the same story beats.

I'm basically burnt out on those type of stories.

I often tell people I liked the original early Dragon Ball way more than DBZ which turned into that formula as it progressed. The early show was more about an adventure, it was focused on a quest with lots of characters having their own unique goals. The world was quirky and weird, the characters were strong but not "I can blow a hole through the planet" levels of power, and even the weak ineffective villains were entertaining to watch.

A few other requirements:

  • Nothing with 500+ episodes, especially if they take like a dozen or more to "get good".
  • No "filler" seasons. An episode or two is fine, but if story progression just grinds to a halt for 12+ episodes I will lose interest.
  • No dark/super-serious/edgelord type of series with no camp or humor to them.
  • No "monster/card battler" anime
  • Must have some humor to it.
  • Prefer bright/colorful over washed out/dark aesthetics.
  • Nothing SUPER well known (in the west), things like Fairy Tail, One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist, etc. I've already either seen or chosen not to watch for reasons.
